History
Founded by Don Gardner in 1982, who literally grew up in the roofing business, He and his wife Jeanne started L.A. Roofing Materials with savings of $5,000. Their son, Steve Gardner who joined the firm in 1991, brings a third generation to the company. Today L.A. Roofing Materials, Inc. has grown to more than $13 million in sales and has a fleet of trucks to service the Southern California area.
Family Owned and Operated
Don, a native of Los Angeles, started L.A. Roofing Materials, Inc. with his wife Jeanne in 1982. Don’s father, Ralph Gardner, was in the building materials business and is remembered and respected in the roofing industry for his accomplishments. Don’s trade expertise came from working in the roofing supply business since 1952. From 1963 through 1981, Don managed and co-owned an earlier roofing supply company. He left his former partner to start L.A. Roofing Materials, Inc.
Jeanne was around the roofing industry from the day that Don and Jeanne were married. She cultivated her business talents while working for the Christian Science Committee on Publication and through unlimited volunteer work with different church and school activities. Jeanne has been on the Board of Directors with Don and his partner at Roofing Sales Corporation and later helped Don make the decision in 1982 to form their own company, L.A. Roofing Materials. Jeanne has been the Chief Financial Officer since the company’s beginning.
Steve is no stranger to the roofing supply business. As a youngster, he worked in the yard and warehouse. He learned the delivery side of the business while in high school and began selling for the company while attending college. Upon graduating from Cal State Long Beach in 1978 with a fine arts degree in design, Steve began a successful career with various design firms in the Los Angeles area, including Gensler/Associates Architects, an International architectural design firm. A yearning to be in the family business was growing so, in 1991, became General Manager at L.A. Roofing Materials.
Continuing to grow the business, Steve became owner in 2012. With his parents guidance, he has continued the growth of the business by partnering with LA Roofing Material's customers for an ideal marriage of contractor and supplier to maintain an equitable profitability to both. Jeanne and Don both continued to work until their passing, Jeanne in 2019 and Don in 2020. The company legacy is still intact with most of the original employees still involved to make sure we all continue the company that Don and Jeanne dreamt it would be.
